Lineage & Heritage
Holi is named in honor of Sitting Bull’s daughter, Standing Holy, and also as a spiritual reminder of the sacred way we are meant to walk through life. She carries forward one of the most critical living connections to a nearly lost lineage: the final remaining genetics from Terra Pines, the first breeder to partner with Majestic View in the earliest days of the breed’s official development.
Her sire, Yuka (formerly Galen), is out of Trinity, a deeply important ancestral line that is no longer widely available in NAID breeding. Through him, Holi preserves a precious and vanishing thread of heritage that is now being revitalized through our program.
Temperament
Holi is a joyful, light-hearted soul whose energy brings a refreshing playfulness to our program. She’s deeply affectionate, highly intelligent, and craves interaction and engagement, especially mental stimulation. Her demeanor is that of a lovable jokester: observant, clever, sweet, and incredibly people-focused.
She is constantly seeking attention, often vying for your focus with endearing antics, and seems to always be searching for a job or puzzle to solve. This combination of mental acuity and social brilliance makes her ideal for working dog lines and future service or scent work placements.
Role in the Program
Holi has been brought into the program for two distinct and critical roles:
- Genetic Preservation – To safeguard and revitalize the Terra Pines lineage, keeping this foundational bloodline alive in the NAID gene pool.
- Temperament Enhancement – To infuse confident, outgoing, affectionate, and highly social traits into lines that may carry more aloof or wary temperaments due to poor early socialization in past programs.
Holi also possesses strong hip health genetics, which we are working to amplify in future generations. Her puppies are expected to shine in scent work, agility, and competitive dog sports, with an innate drive to engage, play, and connect.
🧬 Q&A with Holittopa Hikia (Holi)
Q1: Is Holi a wolfdog or does she carry any wolf content?
No. Holi is not a wolfdog and carries no wolf content. Her mother is a foundational outcross for our program who is a blend of Husky, Malamute, and German Shepherd, none of which are wolf breeds. Her father, Yuka (formerly Galen), has been genetically cleared of any wolf ancestry through UC Davis Veterinary Genetics Laboratory, and his test results are publicly linked from Holi’s profile. Holi is therefore considered clear by parentage, and is registered as an F1 ¼ NAID with the Native American Indian Dog Preservation Project.
Q2: What does it mean that Holi is “high drive,” and is that the same as being “high energy”?
Not quite! Holi is a high-drive dog, meaning she is motivated and fulfilled by mental tasks, jobs, and structured engagement. This is not the same as being high-energy. Holi is not hyper or frantic. She’s actually quite calm and loving in everyday life. But she thrives when she has something to do and excels when her brain is put to work. Her ideal home is one where her intelligence and drive can be channeled into things like scent work, agility, or trick training. Without that kind of outlet, she can become bored or restless; not because she’s wild, but because she’s wired for purpose.
Q3: Holi seems different from some NAIDs. Why is that?
Holi is different, and that’s one of the reasons she was brought into the program. She carries many of the hallmark traits of the old “Hare Indian Dog” type, including her smaller frame, affectionate nature, and her desire to rub up against her humans like a cat. She’s a total goofball and incredibly social, which makes her an important balancing force in our gene pool. Some NAIDs, especially those from poorly socialized lines, can become overly aloof or suspicious. Holi’s confident, joyful nature brings lightness and connection back into the mix, helping us ensure future generations retain not just the look, but the spirit, of the traditional Native dog.
